Alternative Medicine may use in Dialysis Patients

The more pills that kidney dialysis patients take, the more side effects they suffer and the worse their quality of life, a new study finds.

Dialysis
Dialysis is a treatment that does some of the things done by healthy kidneys. It is needed when your own kidneys can no longer take care of your body's needs.

What does dialysis do?
Like healthy kidneys, dialysis keeps your body in balance. Dialysis does the following:
removes waste, salt and extra water to prevent them from building up in the body
keeps a safe level of certain chemicals in your blood, such as potassium, sodium and bicarbonate
helps to control blood pressure .

Alternative medicines

Although alternative medicines are widely used within the general population, the extent of their use within the dialysis population is unknown. It is possible that dialysis patients may be more likely to turn towards alternative therapies in view of the chronicity of their disease. In addition, this particular patient population could be at an increased risk of toxicity from these therapies due to an absence of renal excretion.
