Use Folic Acid to Prevent Neural Tube Defects

Folic acid, a type of vitamin B, has been shown to reduce neural tube birth defects, such as spina bifida or anencephaly. Now it seems folic acid may also prevent heart defects.

-The daily ingestion of a pill containing only 400 µg of folic acid before and during early pregnancy reduced a woman’s risk of having a fetus or infant with a neural tube defect.

Vegetables such as spinach, turnip greens, lettuces, dried/fresh beans and peas, fortified cereal products, sunflower seeds and certain other fruits and vegetables are rich sources of folate. Liver and liver products also contain high amounts of folate, as does baker's yeast. source of folic acid.
